Moon Jellyfish Online is the new retail branch of Sunset Marine Labs, llc.

Sunset Marine Labs, llc has been serving the public aquarium, zoo and professional arena since 1996.  Established as the first commercial jellyfish husbandry lab in the world, we are excited to roll out this new branch of our business! Providing you with 20 years of expertise in jellyfish breeding, tank design, manufacturing and successful care and maintenance of your jellies and jellyfish system.

19 years ago we started commercially growing jellyfish for the zoo and aquarium industry across the United States. Back then only a handful of public aquariums were exhibiting jellyfish, led by Monterey Bay Aquarium, Cabrillo Aquarium, National Aquarium in Baltimore and New England Aquarium. Monterey Bay Aquarium first introduced visitors to the beauty of jellies with “Planet of the Jellies,” a special exhibition that ran from March 1992 to September 1993. It remains one of the most popular in aquarium history. Jellyfish kreisel tank design innovations and new husbandry techniques were developed for that exciting new exhibit; however, mainstream jellyfish husbandry was still off in the distance for most zoos & aquariums. How could they begin to share the experience of jellyfish with their patrons? This is when we stepped in & began supplying them with live jellyfish & custom jellyfish tanks, as well as jellyfish food and their exhibits grew and were a big success!  We  supply jellyfish and/or jellyfish tanks to Indianapolis Zoo, Tennessee Aquarium, Georgia Aquarium, Memphis Zoo and Sea World just to name a few. We have also assisted many professional aquarium service companies across the US by designing and building high-end jellyfish installations for them and educating them on the ins and outs of jellykeeping, stocking those systems with animals & food and continuing customer support. Our customer base is wide—and we are ready to make it even wider by welcoming you, the hobbyist, into the fold!

Developing the Eon Tank

There were many hurdles to overcome before responsibly offering jellyfish to the hobbyist market. Three major factors had to be achieved before we felt confident in offering a jellyfish system to the hobbyist.

First, create a supply of animals that can survive at room temperature. Relying on collected animals for supply is not the way to go as Mother nature will not always have the size and species you need and there can be long periods where no animals are available. Jellies are seasonal and they go with the currents---this means hit-and-miss for wild caught animals. Although we were breeding for the professional arena, we were breeding coldwater moon jellyfish and that system requires a chilling unit to maintain the water temperature between 63º- 65ºF. Chilling units are not cheap and we needed to create a population of tank-raised jellies that can live in room temperature water so the overall cost of the system can be kept to a minimum. We’ve done just that!

We also had to shrink down our most popular jellyfish tank design, the Tumbler Tank, to a manageable and cost effective size for the hobbyist—and it needed to be turn key and easy to maintain. We’ve done just that!

The third hurdle was creating a nutritional and easy to feed jellyfish food that the jellies would thrive on. We actually achieved this hurdle 6 years ago, grow it daily in house and ship it worldwide!

So, to the new jellykeepers of the world we say welcome!  We are here to assist you in becoming successful jelly aquarists! We have the proper jellyfish system, the jellyfish and jellyfish food you need.  We have been testing our new eon jellyfish system for the past year and know you will be happy with it! We absolutely love it! We wouldn’t put it on the market otherwise!
